Today marks a new day in the history of Australia – India relationships, we at UIA are proud to be part of the historic day where Australian Government has acknowledged the importance of exporting uranium for India’s future growth and growing needs of its peaceful utilisation. We as Australian Indians thank the support given by the MP’s and the willingness to engage India.
India has a rapidly expanding electricity sector. It is already burning more coal to meet its ever increasing power requirements, but we believe that this can be offset by cleaner nuclear energy and hence mitigation of greenhouse gases.
This decision and policy shift of the government would engage India on more constructive basis, especially to further dialogue on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
UIA President Mr Amarinder Bajwa said, “UIA has been urging and lobbying for the sale of uranium to India at all the levels of government. We are proud to be part of the historic achievement today. We thank Hon PM Julia Gillard to consider the change in policy”
On behalf of UIA I extend the greetings on this achievement to the members of Sub Continent Friends of Labor and Labor MP’s Hon. Michelle Rowland, Hon. Ed Husic and others that have worked tirelessly to achieve this milestone. I believe this gesture would take the relationship with trust and confidence between India and Australia to the next level.
We look forward to successful strategic ties between the two on various agendas from community development to climate change. We also believe that such cooperation would help building the trade partnerships as well as Australia would benefit from the growth of India.
UIA team led by the president Mr. Amarinder Bajwa included Ex President(s) of UIA Ms Aruna Chandrala and Ms Sue Advani, Dr. Moninder Singh and Vice President Mr. John Niven was present at the conference as observers to support the motion.
