Violence against overseas Indian Students-UIA letter to State Member of Parramatta

Hon.Tanya Gadiel
State Member Parramatta

Dear Tanya

I am writing to you on behalf of Indian overseas students who have suffered unprovoked violence and assaults in Parramatta and Harris Park area in the last several months. I have been made aware of several incidents which happened when these students were getting back to their places of residence after finishing their studies or employment. The most recent assault happened at Campbell street yesterday when a gang of 15 to 17 youths attacked 4 overseas students and took their money and mobile phones. One of the student is admitted in Westmead Hospital. Several FIR's have been lodged with the Parramatta Police Station. In many instances there was undue delay in getting their statements taken. The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of this worsening situation and avail your good offices to explore appropriate measures to prevent repetition of this situation.
As the President of the Apex body of Indian Association, I would request you to look into this matter as a matter of urgency. I would appreciate if a meeting could be organised with representatives of United Indian Associations and Police Area Commander in your office to brainstorm the possible ways to address this problem faced by overseas students.

Kind Regards

Yours sincerely

Dr. Prabhat Sinha
